Stand Alone Solar Electric Generators
Stand alone Solar Energy Generators basically consist of one or more photovoltaic modules, a supporting structure, a battery bank, a charge-regulator, and -if any- a direct to alternate current inverter. The photovoltaic modules transform solar light into direct current electric power. The supporting structure enables orientating the photovoltaic modules so as to optimize solar light capture.
The battery bank stores the solar energy generated and not consumed as that energy is generated. The solar energy thus accumulated is delivered to the consumption points at night and on cloudy days.
The charge regulator is an electronic device that prevents battery bank from either overcharging or excessively discharging, said regulator increases battery bank lifetime.
If any one or more loads are to be supplied with alternate current (110 or 220 Volts), a CC/AC inverter should be intercalated between the battery bank and these.
The generating capacity of a Solar Energy Electric Generator depends on the size of the generator and on the solar resource available at the location where the generator is installed.
Solar Energy Generators are designed in such a way that the energy to be generated should be equivalent to that required by the loads connected to said generators. In general, the solar energy required is estimated for the month with the lowest insolation level (winter time). Where loads are rather high, solar energy generators are combined with other alternative electric power sources (e.g. diesel generators, wind power generators, and thermo electric generators), constituting the so-called "Hybrid Systems".
In the special case of water pumping, the solar energy generator does not use any batteries. The pump is directly connected to the photovoltaic modules. The amount of pumped water is directly proportional to the effective insolation level, and the water tank operates as an accumulator that substitutes the batteries.
For supplying solar energy to small housing units, huts, and the like, which involve daily energy consumption (or energy consumption with no longer than 2 days' interruptions), using the Self-Regulated Generator generators is advisable:

Grid-Tied Solar Generators
In the recent years and for different reasons (e.g. environmental contamination, use of clean energies, etc.) the utilization of these generators for supplying alternate current electric power, as they operate on a parallel basis with the electric power distribution grid, to single-family housing units, business premises, and commerfcial and industrial buildings has become widely accepted in many countries. For this application, the direct current electric power delivered by the solar energy generator is transformed into alternate current electric power (e.g. 220V – 50 Hz) by means of pure sine wave inverters, of high conversion efficiency (higher than 95 %) and greatly reliable. The smart Inverter becomes automatically synchronized (voltage and frequency) with the electric grid to which it is connected. The inverter permanently monitors the condition of the electric supply from the grid. In the event of failure, the inverter disconnects the solar panels for safety purposes and thus it annuls the solar contribution of electric energy.
Photovoltaic Modules
SOLARTEC KS 90T model modules, manufactured in our premises located in La Rioja Industrial Park, are employed for low-power installations. See the electric and mechanical features of these modules on this page. The modules manufactured by KYOCERA (Japan) or SOLARWORLD (USA), of a unit power higher than 200 Wp, are used for middle- and high-power installations. These companies are the biggest manufacturers of these modules worldwide.
Module-Supporting Structure
This structure features are defined for each case in particular and depend upon the place where each user decides to install the solar energy generator (e.g. a terrace or horizontal roof, a park near the pertinent building, sloping, metallic, tiled, or other type of roofs, and parking premises in the open, where panels are useful to provide cars with shadow. The choice of the location should take into account that the modules have to be preferably oriented northwards and that the near trees and buildings do not have to project any shadows on the solar energy generator, especially at noon.
Wiring and Interconnection
The photovoltaic modules are series-parallel interconnected to each other so as to reach the current intensities required by the inverter. These interconnections will be made in compliance with the highest electric safety standards.
Current Inverter
For our installations we use Sunny Boy model inverters, manufactured by SMA Technologie AG from Germany. These equipment units are the most widely sold for this type of applications.
Our Company distributes them in Argentina and gets advice from their manufacturer on a direct basis. On the other hand, these equipment units have been certified in Argentina under the applicable Electric Safety standards. There are models of different power ranges, based upon the same construction principle and details.
Solar Water Heaters
Termotanques Solartec® sets constitute the only hot water source for new housing units. In order to secure hot water availability should sunlight be absent, e.g. upon a number of cloudy days having elapsed, the water tank is fitted with an auxiliary electric heater that is automatically switched on and off and keeps the water at a suitable temperature. For housing units that have been fitted with a water-heater (gas or electric ) Solartec ® equipment is installed between the residential water tank and the cold water inlet of the existing water heater. Using Solartec ® equipment implies substantial savings of gas or electric energy, higher than 70% in the average.

Water Pumping Systems
The SOLARTEC-AGUA water pumping system is the most efficient solution for replacing old equipment with maintenance problems or for new water pumping installations. The system begins to pump in the early hours of the morning and stops at dusk. Solar radiation is transformed into electricity by Solartec modules. The electronic controller adapts to the generation of electrical energy to the requirements of the motor pump, to optimize its operation. And in turn regulates the latter according to the water level in the well and the accumulation tank.

For projecting a water pumping system that can meet its user's needs,
we should have available the following data:

Distance
Water-transfer linear distance (meters)

Caudal
Water output required in summer and/or winter (liters/day)

Outdoor Lighting
Photovoltaic modules directly convert sunlight into direct current electrical energy. This energy is stored in lead acid batteries, of liquid electrolyte without maintenance. At the request of the user and for certain geographical areas, the batteries may be of another type. The nominal operating voltage is 24 volts.
The batteries are housed in a container which, depending on the case, is mounted on the top of the column, at the bottom of the column or buried.
The lamps are formed by the adequate number of leds of low energy consumption and a life superior to the 50,000 hours. An electronic device controls the charge of the batteries, protecting them by preventing overcharging and overcharging. The same device automatically switches the luminaire on and off.
Depending on the type and location of application of the lighting system, you can do it in two ways:
- Continuous (higher power consumption): The luminaire lights up at dusk and goes off at dawn.
- Discontinuous (lower power consumption): The luminaire lights up at dusk and remains on for a specified number of hours. It then shuts off and then turns back on for a certain number of hours before dawn. These two time periods on can be manually adjusted on the controller.

Places where it is advisable to use the luminaires:

No network access
Places where there is no electricity distribution network and maintenance are expensive.

Costs
Places where trenching and breaking of pavements is undesirable or costly.

Security
Locations where theft of copper cables is frequent.

Ecological
Where it is desired to show the use of renewable and non-conventional energies.

Electrification of Fences
Generators must be installed in the open without any additional protection. The support structure is the one that allows to give the solar generator the proper position: north orientation, inclination according to the geographical place and free of shadows between 9 and 17 hours. The photovoltaic modules are attached to the support structure, which is placed at the upper end of a 2-inch galvanized pipe. The pipe can be buried, tacked to a wall, ceiling or communication tower. Its installation avoids the transfer of batteries for periodic recharging, saving time and money. The generator to be installed will depend on the make and model of the electrificator and the geographical place of installation.
